Article 214 of the Constitution of India reads: High Courts for States: There shall be a High Court for each State. On re-organization of the North-Eastern region by the North Eastern Area (Re-organization) Act, 1971, a common High Court was established for the five North-Eastern States Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura ) and the two Union Territories ( Union Territory of Mizoram and the Union Territory of Arunachal Pradesh) and called as the Gauhati High Court. Imphal Bench of the Gauhati High Court came into existence on 21st January 1972, the day Manipur attained its Statehood with its Principal Seat at Guwahati (Assam). The President of India, His Excellency vide Gauhati High Court (Establishment of Permanent Bench at Imphal) order dated 21st January, 1992 had notified the setup/establishment of a Permanent Bench of the Gauhati High Court, Imphal in exercise of the power conferred by Sub-section (2) of Section 31 of the North Eastern Areas (Re-organisation) Act, 1971.
Hon’ble the Chief Justice of India, Hon’ble Mr. Justice M. H. Kania inaugurated the Permanent Bench of Imphal on 14th march, 1992 in the presence of the Governor of Manipur, Mr. Chintamani Panigrahi and the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, Hon’ble Mr. Justice U.L. Bhat. At present there are three Hon’ble station Judges in this Imphal Bench permanently. The names of the Hon’ble station Judges are: 1) Hon’ble Mr. Justice Maibam Binoykumar Singh. A new High Court building consisting of 7 (seven) Court rooms is now under construction at Chingmeirong, Imphal West District and it is likely to be completed in the year 2011. |
